A Day in the Life of a Salesman at Capri Global

"In the end, it's all about the connect. Always, the connect."
– Amar (Head of Sales at Capri Global)

Two months ago, I met Dikshaji Patel, a resilient MSME entrepreneur running a business of handwoven, elegant ladies' bags. It was December 14, 2018, when I first approached her for a loan to expand her business. This time has been transformative—not just professionally but personally—because our relationship evolved from a sales transaction to genuine camaraderie.

Dikshaji’s skepticism about the loan wasn’t unfounded. She questioned, “Amar, will this loan really help me?” I assured her with conviction that it would. Over time, as we shared her struggles and aspirations, we built a connection rooted in trust. Her journey as a single mother who created a niche with 200 loyal clients amazed me. Late-night designing sessions, endless cups of tea, dilemmas of offering credit sales—all narrated with resilience—left an indelible impression.

One day, as I confessed my stress about monthly sales targets, she smiled warmly and said, “What worries the great salesman?” Her kindness fueled my resolve to help her secure the loan.

Morning Rush

The 9:45 am rush-hour local train wakes me from my reflections. As I rush to work, I face the daily chaos of navigating Mumbai traffic and punching in late. Anita, the receptionist, ensures I don’t skip the ritual. The morning meeting sets the tone for the day, with targets discussed and plans set. Capri’s footprint across 10+ states keeps the stakes high, and I embrace every challenge head-on.

Meeting Dikshaji

Armed with my pitch, I head to Dikshaji’s home. Her warm hospitality eases the tension, but she remains unconvinced after my initial presentation. Shifting to a logical analysis, I outline the tangible benefits of a Capri loan for her business growth. Her silence is unsettling, and I leave, believing I’ve lost the deal.

As I approach the elevator, she calls out, “Amar, I think I’ll take the loan from Capri.” The joy is overwhelming, and though I try to contain it, my excitement is evident. I explain the next steps, promising to return with the necessary documents in a few days.

A Day Well Spent

Back at the office, I inform my boss about the conversion. His approving pat on my back solidifies my belief in what I do. Later, at home, my wife’s grounded response to my news—“There’s dal and rice for dinner”—brings me back to reality.

As I drift to sleep, I reflect on the essence of salesmanship: building genuine relationships, understanding needs, and delivering solutions that create value. The adrenaline rush of turning prospects into clients and the satisfaction of meeting targets fuel my dreams for another day in the field.

Lesson Learned
Sales isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about connecting with people, understanding their stories, and becoming a part of their journey toward success.
